LOWER UFFORD
As many of our guests have discovered Lower Ufford is the ideal base for a self-catering Suffolk holiday. The village itself is something of a time-warp with it's own heritage trail which is a great way to spend a couple of hours unwinding. The Parish Church is approached down a lane lined with "chocolate box" cottages, little changed over the centuries, and the church itself boasts on of the best carved font covers in Europe. The White Lion pub is less than a ten minute walk across the water meadows from the barn, and here you will find a micro-brewery and home prepared food.Sitting out in the summer overlooking the pub's meadow you feel yourself transported back to the time Mr Crisp bred the first Suffolk Punch there and in fact whole breed's lineage can be traced back to that horse. A twelve minute walk from the barn brings you to the Ufford Crown renowned as one of the best food pubs in Suffolk.
LOCAL PLACES TO VISIT
We are lucky to be so close to many wonderful places and ammenities, the Historic Market Town of Woodbridge is less than ten minutes drive away, here you can stroll along the riverside walk and visit the newly restored tidemill, then walk up into the town to one of the many coffee shops on the lovely Throughfare with it's host of independent retailers. Snape Maltings and Concert Hall are less than fifteen minutes from the barn and the heritage coast is easily accessible, as well as the well known towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold the barn's owners will suggest unspoilt places to visit that many holiday makers never find.
We are also in the "Land of the Saxon King's" being less than a ten minute drive from the burial grounds at Sutton Hoo and a similiar distance from Rendlesham where recent discoveries seem to suggest a Gret Palace and trading centre as described by the Venerable Bede. In fact Ufford where the barn is based was probably one of the lowest fording places on the River Deben and is thought to take it's name from "Uffa's Ford". Uffa being the King of the Wuffingas. In fact the barn takes its' name from the 13 century Old English Hakerswade meaning an acre swathe.
For golfers there are demanding courses at both Ufford Park Hotel (and floodlit driving range) and Woodbridge G.C both less than ten minutes drive from the barn. For bird-lovers the famous Minismere reserve is about a thirty minute drive away, and a similiar distance is the historic riverside village of Orford from where it is possible to visit Orford Ness or take a river trip around Havergate Island to observe the Avocets.
When it comes to eating out locally there is such wealth of great pubs and eateries in Suffolk that you just have to visit to try
